When Maigret receives an urgent call from his friend Dr. Pardon he responds immediately, despite the late hour; it seems that the doctor has just treated an apparently wealthy woman for a suspicious gunshot wound, but before he could notify the authorities she diappeared with her companion.
The doctor's story gains some perspective when the same woman turns up at the house When Maigret receives an urgent call from his friend Dr. The doctor's story gains some perspective when the same woman turns up at the house on Avenue du Parc-Montsouris where Felix Nahour has just been found - shot to death. This is a masterful exploration of the twin passions of love and hate as they mingle in the shadowy mind of a criminal.

Jun 27, Rhys rated it really liked it. The truth is that the later 'Maigret' novels aren't as good as the early ones.
Yet I have set myself the target of reading them all, and even a relatively weak 'Maigret' novel is still better than reading nothing. Also, this one isn't that bad. In fact the situation is interesting and the characters are intriguing. I have been reading the 'Maigret' novels for four years now and I am almost two-thirds of the way through the entire sequence: This wasn't a BAD novel, it's just that it's a phenomenally nutless wonder of a book.
It was all sort of polite and cozy, which I guess is why they call them "cozies. There's no on-stage violence; it's all just sort of A fine read, but nothing to remember. Sort of feels like a wasted two hours, though not unpleasantly wasted. View all 3 comments. Maigret and the Nahour Case
It's the shortest Maigret I've found aside from those that are obviously short-stories ; it builds up to a certain point, and then--nothing. Even the Chief Inspector gets ticked off by the end. It's like Simenon got bored and just tacked on an ending so he could send it off to the publisher. Perhaps using Middle Eastern characters was politically sensitive in ?

Or was Sorry, Maigret, but Simenon let you down on this one. Or was Simenon trying to write about a milieu he didn't know well? Or was he simply thinking about something else? With a little development, this could have been a very good read.
As it is, it just ends abruptly with a very unbelievable denouement--if you can even call it that. The worst Simenon I've read to date--and it could have been very, very good. What he had was going well, but he just didn't bother. Mar 12, 4cats rated it really liked it Shelves: Maigret finds himself dealing with a murder and not one witness is telling the truth.
Marvellous, a joy, a must! Dec 31, Phillip Kay rated it liked it. It was translated by Alastair Hamilton. Then he is called in to investigate a murder. A wealthy Lebanese gambler, Monsieur Nahour, has been murdered, but everyone connected to this case seems determined to hide information.
Maigret must decide whether the two shootings are connected. The details of police work are presented realistically in this and all the Maigret stories, though the emphasis is on quick sketches of the people in the jobs. There is a wide audience for the kind of deductive reasoning a police detective needs to make though none at all for the similar processes a tax accountant, say, or an archaeologist must pursue and any Maigret story will satisfy this interest.
Slowly Maigret narrows the search until he has four suspects. All four are capable of murder, all four tell him lies. Only one has committed a murder. Not surprisingly Maigret is dissatisfied at the justice of his case. Jul 21, Tony rated it really liked it Shelves: An excellent Maigret mystery.
Maigret and the Nahour case, Georges Simenon ; translated by Alastair Hamilton
An agitated Pardon reports that he has just treated an elegantly dressed woman, accompanied by a foreign gentleman, for a minor bullet wound. Meanwhile in another part of Paris the body of Felix Nahour, a professional gambler, is found. As Maigret investigates the links between the two incidents, he is led to an intriguing in both senses of the word array of characters at the Nahour household. And he is confronted with a pack of lies that almost prevents him from getting to the bottom of it all. This is a superbly crafted suspense story.
Simenon managed to keep his eye on the plot closely. Riprendere a leggere dopo un periodo di pausa durato vari mesi. Hall large print book series Nightingale mystery in large print Nightingale series.
